Sighting
Details
Posted By: : Ben
Sighting Timeframe: January of 2004
County: Giles County
Location: Close to Mountain Lake (Salt Pond Mountain), near the town of Eggleston. West bank of the New River. Tracks headed toward Green Valley and Walker Mountain just a mile from the New River.
Across my 10 acre wooded lot from North to South, uphill.
Activities: No actual sighting of creatures, just two sets of tracks in about 2" of freshly fallen snow in early January of 2004. The tracks appeared to be of an adult and a juvenile? They seemed to be walking side by side and appeared to have stopped by certain trees near the house (cautiously observing?), stepping around, then moving onward in the continued direction. I stopped following when I got to the new woven wire fence my neigbor has up for his cattle.
Witnesses: Just myself. Did tell my wife about it. She could see the tracks from our second floor bedroom window. This is what I saw which prompted me to go out and look at the snow tracks. I initially thought someone had walked across our property during the night by the house and wanted to see and track the trespasser. It was immediately apparent upon close inspection that this person was barefoot. In January? Not out in the middle of Giles County!!! This spooked me pretty good. I have always beleived in the probable existence of these creatures and have spent an inordinate amount of time in the woods hunting and mountain biking, but I figured I`d have to go back to the Sierra Nevadas to have any real chance of an encounter. Perhaps I was wrong.
Setting: Close to Mountain Lake (Salt Pond Mountain), nearer to Green Valley and Walker Mountain just a mile from the New River. Very heavily wooded, lots of cover close to ground due to logging in the area within past 10 years. VERY good turkey hunting in here.
Physical Description: The tracks were larger than human and made a bee-line across the back yard (heavily wooded) as close to the house as 75` and across the property. I followed the tracks in both directions as far as my property line. I examined both fences, but no hairs found, no particular smells or other evidence. These were NOT bear tracks, I have tracked bears and KNOW the difference. My grandfather taught me how to track and I know the tracks of most eastern US woodland creatures. These were NOT the tracks of a rear paw overlaying the front of a fron paw.
